Reading Help for Fluency and Comprehension: It's Never Too Early or Too Late
Reading help. I just don’t remember it. Do you remember learning how to read? It’s funny, but I don’t. I don’t remember how I was taught, or how I even learned. This may be a good thing. Maybe it was so painless, that it didn’t seem like work. I wish all kids had that kind of memory...or non-memory.The truth is, kids come into school with all sorts of advantages and disadvantages. Some kids are well prepared for school, others have little learning experiences, and some kids just enjoy learning more than others.
Don't buy the "Late Bloomer" Explanation
My experience with my tutoring business has shown me one truth. When it comes to reading, don’t believe anyone who says “oh, she’ll be fine, she’s just a late bloomer”. Imagine putting your 7 year old son into a football game with a bunch of 6 foot, 220 pound 18 year olds, and the coach telling you "he'll be fine, he'll hit his growth spurt soon". Can kids catch up? Sure. But why make them catch up while those ahead of her are making equal or better progress? If you’re not the lead horse in the race, the view never changes. Don’t forget that parental help with reading is essential. Teachers and tutors are only with your kids for a limited amount of time. Parents, can tremendously help their kids by reinforcing concepts and reading with their kids at home.
Fluency and Comprehension
One thing I do struggle with, is remembering what I read. And technical manuals? Forget it. I’m not a fast reader, but my fluency has always been better than average.

My comprehension is great as long as it’s something I’m interested in.

But my mind tends to wander when I’m reading something that doesn’t interest me. I can read a page and instantly forget what I just read. Is this a reading problem or a concentration problem, or both?

Phonics Anyone?
What about reading help in the form of phonics? I don’t think we had phonics when I was a kid. But I sure see phonics a lot today, and from what I have seen, it works.

So, reading help comes in many forms, from many different sources. I consider myself a life long learner, and of all of the skills I was taught in school, reading is what I use most often in my quest to learn throughout life.
